Killeen's Simmonsville Baptist destroyed by fire from nearby salvage yard
A fire that began at a salvage yard south of Simmonsville Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas, spread to the church building around noon on Tuesday, according to the Killeen Daily Herald. City investigators determined the fire was accidental, caused by sparks from a heat-producing tool at the salvage yard, with combustible materials there accelerating the spread. Two staff members inside the finance office, Luis Samuel and Yvette Jackson, escaped through the sanctuary after flames blocked the back exit; no civilians or firefighters were injured. Thirty-three Killeen Fire Department personnel responded, and the city release confirmed the building was a total loss. Pastor Deric Jones said the congregation, which had just marked its 75th anniversary, is deciding on a temporary worship space and held a prayer gathering the next evening. The church had already purchased land on Twin Creek Drive for a future building, and Jones said the fire has accelerated those relocation plans.
