Preaching what the Bible teaches about marriage generally does not put a church's tax exemption at risk. In the United States, the restrictions on exempt churches generally concern intervening in political campaigns for or against candidates, not teaching doctrine from the pulpit. You can keep preaching, and you can put your definitions in writing so the threat has nothing to grab.
What is actually happening
Somebody has attached a dollar figure to your convictions and let you imagine the rest. The threat is rarely a filed complaint or an agency letter; it is usually a sentence dropped in a meeting or an email, designed to make leadership go quiet without ever voting to go quiet. What it is fishing for is not a signature but a silence, and a precedent that hard subjects are now off the preaching calendar. Once the sermon is skipped once for safety, it is easier to skip the second time.
The Costed Threat · Rule 9. The fear of losing exemption is doing work that an actual legal action could not do, because no action has been brought. Nobody has read you a rule, named a procedure, or shown you a case. Price the worst outcome out loud and the threat loses most of its size.
What Scripture says
“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.” Proverbs 29:25
What the book says · Chapter 17, The Mountain of Religion: Defending and Reclaiming Churches and Spiritual Organizations
“Every strategy in this chapter depends finally on a spiritual virtue that no governance document can supply. In the case studies of captured institutions, leadership usually failed not for lack of information but for fear of losing status. They feared being called bigots more than they feared compromising the truth.”
From Rules for Radical Christians, quoted exactly.
What the law generally says
In the United States, federal tax law generally grants exemption to churches and generally does not police the content of their doctrine or their teaching on moral questions. The limits usually cited fall in two places: intervening in political campaigns on behalf of or against candidates for public office, and devoting a substantial part of activities to influencing legislation. Revocation of a church's exemption is generally rare, and federal procedure often gives churches particular notice and inquiry protections before any examination proceeds. Separately, many states grant property tax exemption and require charitable or corporate filings under their own standards, which are not identical to the federal ones. The specifics, including what your state requires of a church corporation and what it conditions property exemption on, turn on your state, which is what Ask looks up.
The words to use
"We teach what Scripture says about marriage because we believe it is true, and we do not plan to stop. If you believe that endangers our exemption, can you point me to the specific provision you have in mind, in writing?"
Your move
- Ask for the threat in writing. One email: who raised the concern, what provision they believe applies, and what they are asking the church to change.
- Read your own statement of faith and bylaws this week. If marriage, justice, and membership are not defined in plain words, the gap is where the pressure will go next.
- Adopt a short written policy distinguishing doctrinal teaching, which continues, from candidate endorsement and campaign activity, which the church does not do. Date it and file it.
- Put the worst case on paper at your next leaders' meeting: what an inquiry would actually involve, what it would cost, and who would handle it. Fear shrinks when it is itemized.
- Use Ask for your state to learn how property tax exemption and charitable filings work where you are, before anyone tells you they are already in jeopardy.
- Document the date, the wording, and the person's role every time the exemption is raised in a meeting. Patterns matter more than any single remark.
- Ask for the complaint, not a summary of it. "Someone is upset" is not a claim you can answer.
- Do not quietly drop the sermon series while you sort it out. That concession is the whole objective, and it is very hard to reverse.
