Newsom Vetoes Bill Shielding Abortion, Trans-Care Providers From Extradition
According to Mother Jones, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed AB 2164, the Care Without Fear Act, which would have barred future California governors from extraditing abortion providers, helpers, and patients—as well as those involved in gender-affirming care—to other states for prosecution. The bill followed Louisiana's attempt earlier this year to extradite a California doctor for mailing abortion pills, a move Newsom publicly opposed. Despite that stance, Newsom argued extradition decisions should remain an executive prerogative rather than be written into law, saying he was troubled by binding a future governor's authority. Reproductive rights groups, including Reproductive Freedom for All and the Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine, called the veto disappointing, warning that executive orders protecting abortion and transgender-care providers could be reversed by a future governor opposed to those practices. Eighteen other Democratic-led states have already passed similar anti-extradition laws. The veto comes as California's Democratic gubernatorial frontrunner, Xavier Becerra, is expected to continue Newsom's policies, while Republican candidate Steve Hilton has said he would have honored the Louisiana extradition request.
