Trump Deletes AI Image Casting Himself as Christ After Backlash
What Alinsky tactic is being used
2 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.
Rule 4
“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
The effective pressure here came from inside the president's own religious base holding him to the standard he claims: Megan Basham demanded he take the image down and "ask for forgiveness from the American people and then from God," Cam Higby said he would not defend blasphemy, and Speaker Mike Johnson later told reporters, "I did ask him to delete it." That is Rule 4 working exactly as described — the image came down in about thirteen hours not because of opponents but because supporters applied his professed book of rules to him. The tactic only bit because the gap between profession and practice was real and visible.
Counter-Rule 4 · Radical Integrity
Close the gap between stated values and actual practice before anyone else finds it. This tactic only works where the gap is real.
Radical integrity means closing the same gap in yourself before someone else points at it. This month, scroll back through what you personally shared in the last year and delete anything that treats a politician in language Scripture reserves for Christ; if you forwarded this image, say so plainly to whoever you sent it to. Then write down, in one sentence, the standard you just applied, and commit in advance to applying it to a leader you like as readily as to one you don't.
Rule 5
“Ridicule is man's most potent weapon.”
Once the objection landed, the response was not an argument but a laugh at the objectors: Trump said "only the fake news could come up with that one" and asked reporters "How did they come up with that?", while Vice President Vance said it was a joke and that people "weren't understanding his humor." That reframes serious Christians as humorless or duped rather than answering what the image depicted. Ridicule of the complaint substitutes for a reply to the complaint.
Counter-Rule 5 · Dignity as Armor
Do not supply the angry reaction the ridicule is fishing for. Composure denies it the thing it feeds on.
Do not supply the furious reaction the framing is fishing for. State your objection once, calmly, in a sentence about the image rather than the man — that depicting any living person with Christ's glory is wrong whoever does it — and cheerfully grant that a joke is possible, noting that intent does not change what was shown. Refuse to make claims about his soul, sincerity, or private motive: the reporting establishes what was posted, deleted, and said, and nothing about intent.
Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
