NYC Signs $8.9M Deal for Gender Care to Minors, Defying Federal Ban
New York City's Department of Health, under Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration, has signed two contracts totaling $8.9 million to fund 'gender-affirming' care for transgender patients under 18, the New York Post reports. The vendors, Callen-Lorde and the Nonprofit Organization for Philanthropic Initiatives, will provide services from 2027 to 2029, including 'the prescription and administration of puberty-blockers and hormone replacement therapy to all minor patients for whom such services are medically necessary based on the prevailing standards of care,' according to the city's public notice. The move runs counter to a federal Department of Justice position that such treatments for minors are medically dangerous and illegal, and hospitals involved have faced threats of losing federal research grants and Medicaid/Medicare funding. State Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar criticized the city for proceeding without parental-consent safeguards comparable to those required for abortion. Twenty-seven states have already banned or limited such procedures for minors, per KFF, and Colorado voters will decide a similar ban in November. City officials offered no immediate comment.
