Michigan court revives parents' religious liberty suit over school gender policy

Michigan court revives parents' religious liberty suit over school gender policy

What Alinsky tactic is being used

3 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.

Rule 2

“Never go outside the expertise of your people.”

Everything actually at issue here is technical ground: whether an August 7, 2026 order granting reconsideration in Mead v. Rockford is a merits ruling, what the district's written guidance for staff actually says versus what its administrative paperwork rules say, and whether a local policy has any notification carve-out. The alert itself concedes it does not know the district, the court level, or the reasoning — that gap is where conviction gets substituted for knowledge. A parent who argues from feeling at a board meeting loses to an administrator who has read the policy number.

Counter-Rule 2 · The Stewardship of Competence

Become genuinely competent in the ground being fought over — read the policy, learn the procedure — rather than arguing from conviction alone.

This month: pull the actual order through the ADF case page or PACER and read what it decided (reconsideration granted, free-exercise claim reinstated) rather than the press summary. Then FOIA your own district's written policy and staff guidance on student name and pronoun use, and write down the policy number and adoption date. Go to the meeting able to quote the district's own document back to it.

Rule 11

“If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.”

An interested party's press release — ADF represents the Meads — is being read as "court revives parents' religious liberty suit," which invites readers to hear "the court ruled the district violated our rights." It did not; it granted reconsideration and let a dismissed claim proceed after Mirabelli v. Bonta. Push that overstatement in public and the correction, not the concealment, becomes the story.

Counter-Rule 11 · Proportional Truth

Refuse to overclaim, even where it would help. One exaggeration hands the other side the only weapon that works permanently.

Say only what the record says: a federal judge reinstated a claim, and the case has not been tried. When someone at your church repeats a stronger version, correct it gently and show them the order. Refuse to describe your own district's policy as "the same as Rockford's" until you have the two documents side by side.

Rule 4

“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”

The plaintiffs' strongest fact is the district's own internal inconsistency: staff were reportedly guided to use a masculine name and male pronouns internally while official paperwork sent home used the student's legal name and sex. That is a gap between an institution's written rules and its practice, and it is doing much of the legal work in the case.

Counter-Rule 4 · Radical Integrity

Close the gap between stated values and actual practice before anyone else finds it. This tactic only works where the gap is real.

Apply Counter-Rule 4 to yourself before you apply Rule 4 to the board: check that your own church, school, or ministry's written policies on parental notification, counseling records, and youth confidentiality actually match what staff do, and fix any gap in writing this month. Then ask the district, courteously and in writing, for the two documents — the staff guidance and the records/paperwork rule — and let the discrepancy, if any, speak for itself.

Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
