LDS Church Breaks Political Neutrality, Opposes Idaho Abortion Rollback
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints instructed its congregations across Idaho to oppose Proposition 1, a ballot initiative that would reverse the state's near-total abortion ban, according to Axios and East Idaho News. A letter from the church's Area Presidency, read from the pulpit and addressed to all Idaho congregations, states "The Church opposes this initiative" and urges members to voice opposition "in a respectful manner." Because LDS governance is hierarchical, the letter is understood to reflect the will of church headquarters in Salt Lake City. Axios notes this is a departure from the church's decades-long stated neutrality on abortion legislation, a position that quietly changed after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022. The article also flags that Idaho's ban is stricter than the church's own guidance, which allows exceptions when a mother's life or health is in "serious jeopardy," while Idaho's law exempts only cases where the mother's life is at risk of death.
