Congress Probes CPS Transgender Policies, Parental Notification Rights
The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce is demanding Chicago Public Schools turn over documents, including parent and coach complaints, about district policies supporting transgender students, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. In a Thursday letter, Committee Chairman Rep. Tim Walberg gave CPS until Sept. 11 to comply, saying the panel is examining whether CPS policies affect "the safety, privacy, and well-being of children" and whether parents are excluded from major decisions about their children. Walberg is also reviewing whether CPS violated federal law giving parents the right to review education records, and whether the district has updated policies to comply with a recent Supreme Court ruling protecting teachers who disclose a child's gender-identity transition to parents. CPS Supt. Macquline King testified before the committee in June and, per Walberg's letter, did not directly answer whether CPS changed its policy after that ruling. CPS confirmed receiving the letter but offered no further comment. The U.S. Department of Education separately said this week that districts could lose federal funding for failing to disclose gender-identity information to parents who request it.
