Can my child's school require them to perform in a play that mocks our faith?

What is actually happening

A script has been chosen that treats belief like yours as the joke, and your child has been handed a line in it. The request is fishing for a signature of a particular kind: a child who says the words, laughs along, and thereby signals that the mockery is harmless and that nobody serious objects. It is also fishing for your silence, because an objection made privately at home costs the school nothing. Ridicule works by teaching an audience to feel contempt before anyone makes an argument, and it works twice as well when the person ridiculed is the one delivering the line. What the law generally says

Public schools in the United States are government actors, and courts have generally been protective of a student's right not to be compelled to personally speak or perform a message that violates his sincerely held religious beliefs. Many states and districts also have written policies allowing a parent to request an alternative assignment for instruction or material that conflicts with religious conviction, and some require notice to parents before certain content is used. Schools generally may still teach about ideas and literature they choose, so the usual remedy is a substitute role or assignment rather than cancellation of the play. Private and religious schools operate under their enrollment contracts and handbooks instead, so the analysis there is different. Your move

1. Ask the teacher in writing for a copy of the full script and the assignment description, including how the performance is graded. Keep it friendly and short.
2. Send the written request for an alternative role or assignment, using the sentence above, and ask for a reply by a specific date.
3. Ask the school office for the district policy on alternative assignments and religious accommodation, by name, and read it yourself before the next conversation.
4. If the teacher declines, take the same written request to the principal, then to the superintendent's office, adding nothing new and changing nothing.
5. Talk to your child about staying in the class, staying kind, and not taking the bait if he is teased for it.

• Document dates, names, and what was said in each conversation, the same day it happens.

• Do not let your child simply skip class or go silent without a request on record, and do not send an angry email you would not want read aloud at a board meeting.
