State Dept. Awards $1.4B to Faith Groups for Global Aid Work
The U.S. State Department announced on Aug. 6 a partnership with faith-based organizations to distribute nearly $2 billion in international humanitarian and health aid, following the 2025 dismantling of USAID and cuts of at least $26 billion in foreign assistance, according to Baptist News Global. Under the "America First Global Health Strategy," $1.4 billion will fund health services through faith-based and community hospitals in 20 countries. A World Vision-led consortium will administer an $850 million "Faith and Community Initiative" over five years, supporting more than 2,500 clinics and training 30,000 local health workers across 17 countries. An additional $538 million for humanitarian response will go to Samaritan's Purse, World Vision and Compassion International. Notably, several of these same organizations publicly lamented the earlier USAID cuts in 2025, while Samaritan's Purse president Franklin Graham defended the agency's dismantling and his organization separately received $19 million in frozen USAID funds. No doctrinal or policy conditions attached to the grants were disclosed in the announcement.
