Texas Senate Race Pits Rival Theologies: Paxton's Orthodoxy vs. Talarico's Progressivism

Texas Senate Race Pits Rival Theologies: Paxton's Orthodoxy vs. Talarico's Progressivism

What Alinsky tactic is being used

2 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.

Rule 4

“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”

Talarico's argument is built on the church's own book: he presses "love your neighbor" against fellow Christians, and on the Texas House floor during the May 24, 2025 debate he asked SB 10's House sponsor to state what the fourth commandment says — while the chamber was passing a Ten Commandments bill on a Saturday. The force of that moment came entirely from the gap between a display being mandated and its sponsor's fluency with the text. This is Rule 4 in its purest form, because here the "book of rules" is literally Scripture.

Counter-Rule 4 · Radical Integrity

Close the gap between stated values and actual practice before anyone else finds it. This tactic only works where the gap is real.

Close the gap before it is exploited: this month, read Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 straight through, learn which numbering your tradition uses (Jewish, Catholic and Protestant traditions divide them differently), and be able to say what your church teaches about the Sabbath/Lord's Day and why. If your congregation is donating SB 10 posters, make sure the people handing them out can explain all ten from memory. Refuse to advocate for a display of a text you have not recently read.

Rule 11

“If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.”

Paxton's charge that Talarico called God "nonbinary" and called opposition to oil and gas un-Christian is a negative pushed hard — a compressed, maximally damaging rendering of remarks Talarico says were something else. Both campaigns are working the same seam: one side's "Biblical Truth," the other side's "Christian nationalism," each a label doing the work an argument would otherwise have to do. Whichever characterization turns out to be shaved, the side that shaved it loses the benefit of the doubt on everything else it said.

Counter-Rule 11 · Proportional Truth

Refuse to overclaim, even where it would help. One exaggeration hands the other side the only weapon that works permanently.

Before repeating either claim in a Sunday school class or a comment thread, find the full clip or transcript and watch the whole exchange, not the excerpt — the Texas House posts chamber video and the Attorney General's office posts his statements in full. If you cannot locate the original, say "I've seen it reported but haven't verified it" and leave it there. Concede the accurate part of the other candidate's position out loud; it costs nothing and it is the only thing that keeps your correction credible later.

Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
