Texas Court Shields Gateway Church From Most Claims in Morris Abuse Cover-Up Suit
What Alinsky tactic is being used
2 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.
Rule 4
“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
Gateway's own book of rules is the issue: the church publicly promised an investigation and its attorney says the ruling 'does not diminish what Clemishire endured,' while its winning legal position is that no court may look at how it investigated or what it said publicly about her. Justice Lee's opinion holds abstention covers even statements made to the public — so the church's stated transparency is, by its own argument, unreviewable. That distance between what is said and what is defended in court is the real leverage anyone hostile to churches now has.
Counter-Rule 4 · Radical Integrity
Close the gap between stated values and actual practice before anyone else finds it. This tactic only works where the gap is real.
Close the gap in your own congregation before someone else measures it: this month get the written child-protection and misconduct policy in hand, and compare what it promises (immediate reporting, notice to members, cooperation with police) against what actually happened the last time a concern was raised. Where the two do not match, ask the board to record the discrepancy and the fix in the minutes. Refuse to sign or endorse any statement about an allegation that the church is not willing to have examined.
Rule 11
“If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.”
Ecclesiastical abstention is a genuine and narrow First Amendment protection, and here it is being pushed to its outer edge — covering a church's public communications about a woman abused at 12 by its founder, who pleaded guilty and paid her $270,000. Pushed that far, a doctrine most Christians support risks breaking through into its opposite: Rep. Jeff Leach's 'deeply troubling' statement is what the beginning of a legislative rollback of church autonomy sounds like.
Counter-Rule 11 · Proportional Truth
Refuse to overclaim, even where it would help. One exaggeration hands the other side the only weapon that works permanently.
Do not overclaim in either direction when you talk about this at church. The ruling did not find Gateway truthful or Clemishire wrong — it held the courts may not decide that — and it leaves criminal prosecution and the Texas duty to report child abuse fully intact. Read one full news account of the opinion before repeating anyone's summary of it, and correct fellow members who say either 'the church was cleared' or 'churches are now above the law.'
Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
