SC Church Closes Academy Amid Sex Offender Investigation
What Alinsky tactic is being used
2 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.
Rule 4
“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
The force of this story is not an outside campaign but a real gap between what a church said it was and what it did: a ministry that asked the community to trust it with children from six weeks old to kindergarten, while a man with a 2023 conviction for sexual exploitation of a minor worked on the shared campus as a custodian. Prosecutors, seven reported civil suits, and every future critic will simply hold Pawleys Island Community Church to its own stated standard. Rule 4 works only where the gap is genuine, and here the sheriff's office says it found abundant evidence that it was.
Counter-Rule 4 · Radical Integrity
Close the gap between stated values and actual practice before anyone else finds it. This tactic only works where the gap is real.
Close the gap in your own congregation before anyone measures it. This month, ask your church office for its written child-protection policy, check whether every paid worker and volunteer with child access has a fingerprint-based background check on file, and run the names of anyone volunteering with children through the free SLED registry at scor.sled.sc.gov. If the policy is missing, unadopted, or unenforced, say so in writing to the elders and ask for a dated board action fixing it — do not wait to be embarrassed into it.
Rule 11
“If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.”
The alert itself flags the pressure point: the closure and the arrests are established, but "specific wrongdoing, cover-up, or institutional failure" is not. A story this ugly invites Christians to push the negative harder than the record supports — asserting a decades-long conspiracy, or conversely insisting the charged leaders are victims of a witch hunt. Either overclaim will be corrected in court and will discredit everything else the person says about child safety in churches.
Counter-Rule 11 · Proportional Truth
Refuse to overclaim, even where it would help. One exaggeration hands the other side the only weapon that works permanently.
Say only what you can source, and say it precisely: five people arrested, charges announced by Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver on July 20 and July 29, 2026, and charges are accusations that a court has not resolved. Keep a one-page dated timeline with a link beside each entry, and when someone at church repeats a rumor, answer with "I haven't seen that in the record — where did you read it?" Refuse to name or speculate about children or families.
Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
