Oregon Parents Sue State After Losing Daughter Over Trans Refusal
According to a federal lawsuit reported by The Daily Signal and cited by The Gateway Pundit, Nicole and David Calaway filed suit July 15 against a former therapist and several Oregon Department of Human Services officials after the state removed their then-15-year-old daughter from their home in July 2024. The removal followed the Calaways' decision to end therapy sessions the day before; the therapist, Jennifer Forster, then contacted the abuse hotline, allegedly at a caseworker's urging. A caseworker reportedly wrote that the parents' "adverse reactions" to their daughter's gender identity had caused psychological harm. The Calaways say they showed their daughter videos of detransitioners so she could make an "informed decision" before altering her body. Oregon withdrew its dependency petition in November 2024 but kept administrative abuse findings on record, which followed the family after they relocated to Florida. In 2026, ODHS separately alleged David exhibited "grooming behaviors," though no arrest or criminal charge has been identified. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, seeks at least $5 million in damages plus an injunction clearing their names.

Why Bible-Believing Christians Should Care
This case illustrates the jurisdictional dispute at the heart of the family mountain: a state child-welfare bureaucracy treating a parent's biblical conviction that sex is fixed and unchangeable as a form of abuse, then using that label to seize custody and mark the parents for life. Christians should note that Oregon has done this before — denying Jessica Bates an adoption for refusing to affirm a hypothetical child's transgender identity, a policy the Ninth Circuit found likely unconstitutional. Parents who decline to affirm a child's gender confusion, even while offering both sides of the medical debate, may find the state redefining truth-telling as psychological injury. Believers should understand that parental authority and religious conviction are increasingly being overridden by administrative agencies acting in the name of child welfare.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. — Proverbs 22:6

From the book
Legitimate expertise is technical competence exercised under moral authority, like a mathematics teacher explaining algebra. False expertise is ideology wearing the costume of science in order to usurp moral authority, like a counselor telling a child that his parents are unsafe because they hold biblical views on gender.
