Oneonta, NY Drag Show at Family Festival Sparks City Hall Clash
What Alinsky tactic is being used
3 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.
Rule 4
“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
The entire clash turns on a gap the festival itself created: the act was advertised as "family friendly," and then the performer on stage warned parents it would be "PG-16." Residents are not arguing abstract morality — they are holding the organizers to their own published description, which is why the complaint has traction. The organizer's response, that performances "were publicized in advance so attendees could choose," is an attempt to close that gap after the fact rather than a denial that it existed.
Counter-Rule 4 · Radical Integrity
Close the gap between stated values and actual practice before anyone else finds it. This tactic only works where the gap is real.
Close the same gap on your own side first: if your church advertises a fall festival or VBS night as "family friendly," write down this month what that phrase commits you to — content, age guidance, who approves acts — and keep the printed program and the ad copy. When you ask the city or a festival for content details, ask in writing and save the reply, so that any future claim rests on the organizer's own documents rather than on memory of what was said from a microphone.
Rule 12
“The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.”
One attendee did exactly what this rule describes: instead of backing the petition to ban drag performances, he proposed neutral community standards for permitted events. That is the constructive alternative, and right now the petition does not have one — it names what it wants stopped but not what rule would replace the current absence of a rule. Against that, the mayor's free-expression answer is the only position in the room with a principle attached to it.
Counter-Rule 12 · Universal Construction
The book agrees with this one rather than inverting it: if you would tear something down, you are obliged to build the thing that replaces it.
Draft the replacement before the next regular Common Council meeting (first and third Tuesdays, 5:30 p.m., City Hall, 258 Main Street): one page, viewpoint-neutral, applying the same advance-content-disclosure and posted age-advisory requirement to every performance at a permitted or city-sponsored event. Get the city's current parade and event permit application from the Clerk's office first so your draft amends a real form, and ask one council member to carry it. Refuse to sign or circulate anything that only names one kind of performer.
Rule 11
“If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.”
This story is a fight over characterization, not over whether a show happened. One mother's account — performers on all fours, simulating sexual movements, taking tips from children, wearing prosthetics small children could not read as costume — is met by advocates saying opponents are sexualizing the performance. If any one of those details is overstated or cannot be shown, the overstatement becomes the story and every accurate detail is discarded with it.
Counter-Rule 11 · Proportional Truth
Refuse to overclaim, even where it would help. One exaggeration hands the other side the only weapon that works permanently.
Before anyone repeats the account at a public meeting, gather what can be sourced: the festival's published lineup and advertising, photos or video from the day, and the exact wording of the advisory the performer gave from the stage. In public comment, say only what you personally saw or can hand to a council member, attribute the rest, and answer "I don't know, I'll find out" when pressed on a detail you cannot document. Do not round "some audience members tipped" up to "children tipped" unless you watched it.
Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
