NYT: New Gene-Editing Tech Aims to Reshape Personality, Not Just Genes
What Alinsky tactic is being used
One of the thirteen rules is in play here.
Rule 9
“The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.”
The alert's own summary concedes that "specifics on the technology's developers, methods, and regulatory status are still emerging" — the fear is doing the work of a fact that has not yet been established. A headline about editing personality itself is far more terrifying than what is presently demonstrable: the startups named in this news cycle (Preventive, Manhattan Genomics, Bootstrap Bio) are pre-clinical, and heritable embryo editing cannot lawfully be reviewed by the FDA in the United States at all.
Counter-Rule 9 · Courageous Realism
Name the worst case out loud and cost it honestly. Fear of the unnamed is doing most of the work.
Name the worst case out loud and price it honestly this month: read the ASGCT germline statement and the May 2025 ISCT/ARM/ASGCT moratorium call, and write down on one page what is actually possible now, what is barred, and what is merely proposed. When someone in your congregation says personality editing is happening, be the one who can say what the published record shows and what is still speculation. Refuse to repeat the headline's framing until you can cite the underlying reporting yourself.
Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
