November Ballot Measures Nationwide Will Decide Abortion, Gender, Marriage Laws
What Alinsky tactic is being used
3 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.
Rule 3
“Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.”
The Idaho fight has been moved almost entirely onto procedural ground that ordinary church members have never worked on: ballot titles and the fiscal impact statement prepared under the initiative statutes, and now a second Idaho Supreme Court case over the 'yes' and 'no' statements that will print on the ballot and in the state voter pamphlet (argued Sept. 2, 2026, ruling pending). The measure is also titled the 'Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act' and bundled with contraception, fertility treatment, prenatal care and miscarriage care, so the argument is fought over drafting and definitions rather than over abortion plainly named.
Counter-Rule 3 · Preparation and Width
Prepare the unfamiliar ground before you are dragged onto it. "I don't know, I'll find out and come back" beats an improvised answer.
This month, download the certified initiative PDF from voteidaho.gov and read it next to the ballot title and fiscal impact statement; mark exactly what the text says about fetal viability and what regulation after viability it permits. Learn the calendar too — voter pamphlet printing was due Sept. 25 and the election is Nov. 3 — so deadlines don't ambush you. When asked in conversation what a clause does, say 'I'll check the text and come back' instead of improvising.
Rule 11
“If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.”
Negatives are being pushed hard from both directions: the state Republican Party calls the initiative 'radical and deceptive' and its title dishonest, while the sponsors sued twice claiming the state's own ballot language was biased and misleading — and in June 2025 the Idaho Supreme Court ordered the short title and fiscal impact statement revised, which hands sponsors a real grievance. In that climate, one overstated claim from a church member becomes the story instead of the initiative's text.
Counter-Rule 11 · Proportional Truth
Refuse to overclaim, even where it would help. One exaggeration hands the other side the only weapon that works permanently.
Argue from the initiative's own sentences and say plainly where you don't know a clause's effect. Before repeating a secondhand claim from an alert or a mailer — including this alert's line about a new Massachusetts abortion law — find the primary document; if you can't find it, drop the claim rather than soften it. Write down the three facts you have verified and use only those when you speak at a meeting.
Rule 1
“Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have.”
Both camps are trading on an appearance of inevitability that nobody in the pew has actually audited: sponsors point to more than 100,000 signatures gathered against the 70,725 required and polling near 60 percent support, while the state party warns of 'heavy out-of-state money' behind the measure. The perceived size of each side is doing work that the counted size may not support.
Counter-Rule 1 · Reality Over Perception
Count the actual numbers. The phantom army depends on nobody checking whether it exists.
Pull the campaign finance filings for the measure's committees from the Secretary of State (Ballotpedia's summaries ran through Jan. 15, 2026, with later reports following the April 15 deadline) and write down how much came from inside Idaho. Check the poll's wording — support in the same survey ranged from 58.9 to 60.5 percent depending on how the question was phrased. Then report the numbers you found rather than the mood.
Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
