NJ School Board Faces Death Threats After Parents Sue Over Trans Policy

What Alinsky tactic is being used

3 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.

Rule 13

“Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

The dispute has stopped being about a policy document and become about named individuals: board member Michael Ryan says volunteer board members have received death threats in the mail daily since the suit was filed, and the vice president is being answered by name at a packed meeting. The asymmetry is the giveaway — the two parent plaintiffs are anonymous in the federal filing, while the people on the receiving end are named, unpaid, and reachable at their home mailboxes. That is target-picking, freezing and personalizing, whoever is doing the mailing.

Counter-Rule 13 · Radical Solidarity

Stand publicly with whoever has been singled out. Isolation is the whole mechanism; refusing it disarms the tactic.

At the next meeting, or in a signed letter to the board, say plainly and by name that threats against volunteer board members are wrong and that you condemn them — say it even if you agree with every word of the lawsuit. Keep your own criticism attached to the policy text and the recorded vote, never to a member's family, job, or home. Refuse to forward anonymous material about individual members, and say so when someone hands it to you.

Rule 9

“The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.”

The weapon in this story is a threat, not an act: letters arriving daily that terrify a volunteer board without anything having happened. The same shape appears in the litigation claim that students "could face discipline" for refusing to use another student's pronouns — a possibility described in the abstract, which does more work on a crowd than a count of actual disciplinary cases would.

Counter-Rule 9 · Courageous Realism

Name the worst case out loud and cost it honestly. Fear of the unnamed is doing most of the work.

Cost the fear honestly. Read the policy's own discipline language before repeating what it supposedly does, and ask the district in writing how many students have been disciplined under it since January 2024 and under which code-of-conduct provision. Then keep showing up: an empty room after a threat is exactly what the threat was for, so bring two people who have read the policy with you.

Rule 11

“If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.”

The anonymous mailers pushed a negative so far it flipped: daily death threats have turned the story from what the policy says into who is being terrorized, and the board can now call the lawsuit "reckless" without arguing its merits. Overreach by a handful has purchased the other side a defense that argument could not.

Counter-Rule 11 · Proportional Truth

Refuse to overclaim, even where it would help. One exaggeration hands the other side the only weapon that works permanently.

Do not hand anyone the same gift. Quote Policy 5145.7's actual sentences rather than characterizations of it, don't assert that the threats are exaggerated or staged when you have no evidence either way, and when someone at the microphone overstates what the policy requires, correct it out loud. One verifiable exaggeration from your side will be the only thing anyone remembers of the evening.

Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
