NJ District Sued for Barring Adult Mentors Only from Christian Student Clubs
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has filed a federal lawsuit against the Hopewell Valley Regional School District in New Jersey, alleging the district bars outside volunteers from FCA "Huddle" meetings at Hopewell Valley Central High School and Timberlane Middle School while continuing to allow adult mentors and guest speakers in dozens of other student clubs, such as Robotics and GirlTalk. The suit, filed Aug. 11 in U.S. District Court by the religious liberty firm Becket, names the school board, Superintendent Dr. Rosetta Treece, and state education officials as defendants, arguing the policy violates the Equal Access Act and First Amendment. The dispute traces to a March 2025 letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, after which the district restricted outside adults from FCA meetings and later expanded that restriction ahead of the 2025-26 school year, according to the complaint. FFRF counters that federal law requires religious clubs to remain student-led and says it never sought to eliminate the clubs. District attorney Paul Green declined to address the case's merits, calling the constitutional issues "complex." Litigation is ongoing.

Why Bible-Believing Christians Should Care
This case tests whether the Equal Access Act's promise of equal treatment for religious student clubs is being honored or quietly hollowed out through selective enforcement. If Becket's allegations hold, a public school permitted outside mentors for secular clubs while singling out a Christian club for restriction — the very viewpoint discrimination the Act was written to prevent. Bible-believing parents and students should recognize that access to Christian fellowship on public campuses is not guaranteed by goodwill; it depends on districts applying the same rules to every club, including ones built around prayer and Scripture. Watch how courts define "student-led" — that definition will shape whether FCA and similar ministries can keep supportive adult mentors involved at all.

From the book
Schools operate under mandates for safety, inclusion, and critical thinking. Activists weaponize those terms under Rule 4. Redefine safety to mean protection from opposing ideas and the school must now exclude traditional Christian viewpoints in order to fulfill its own stated mandate.
