Massachusetts Law Allows Abortion Until Birth; National Media Mostly Silent

What Alinsky tactic is being used

3 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.

Rule 3

“Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.”

The fight was moved onto ground where procedure, not conviction, decided the outcome: H.5595 came out of House Ways and Means as a substitute for H.2370 on July 21, 2026, passed the House the next day, and was taken up by the Senate on July 31 — the last day of formal session — by a 15-4 standing vote rather than a recorded roll call. Opponents who knew the moral argument cold were left with about a week, no full committee hearing, and in the Senate no individual votes on the record to point at afterward.

Counter-Rule 3 · Preparation and Width

Prepare the unfamiliar ground before you are dragged onto it. "I don't know, I'll find out and come back" beats an improvised answer.

Learn the machinery before the next bill, not during it: read H.5595 itself at malegislature.gov, then find out from your legislator's office how a Ways and Means substitute bypasses further hearings and what a standing vote does to the record. Sign up for bill-tracking email alerts on the Legislature's site for the sections of Chapter 112 that were amended, so you hear about a filing in January rather than a floor vote in July. When asked something procedural you don't know, say you will find out and come back with the citation.

Rule 11

“If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside.”

Both sides pushed a negative until it flipped: supporters argued that the old four-pronged post-24-week framework was so rigid that women like Kate Dineen had to leave the state, so abolishing all limits reads as compassion; critics compressed a law about physician judgment after 24 weeks into the flat phrase "abortion until birth," which drew a Snopes fact-check and let the claim be filed under rumor rather than answered. The Daily Signal's own complaint — that AP buried the substance under "opponents say" — shows how much of this story is a fight over labels.

Counter-Rule 11 · Proportional Truth

Refuse to overclaim, even where it would help. One exaggeration hands the other side the only weapon that works permanently.

Refuse the shortcut even where it would help: quote the statute's actual words, "an abortion may be performed by a physician based upon the professional judgment of the physician," and say plainly that this replaced the pre-existing post-24-week conditions in G.L. c. 112, §§ 12M-12P. If you speak at a meeting or post about it, cite the bill number and the vote dates and let the text carry the weight. One provable overstatement in public costs you every accurate sentence that follows it.

Rule 12

“The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.”

Supporters built their case on concrete cases and named remedies — parents testifying about a 33-week diagnosis, physicians saying medicine does not fit legal categories, hospitals declining care patients already qualified for. The critique on the other side, as reported, was largely denunciation plus a call for the governor's excommunication; the alert's own third action item concedes the point by pointing readers to pregnancy resource centers. Whoever answers the hard 30-week diagnosis with something real holds the ground.

Counter-Rule 12 · Universal Construction

The book agrees with this one rather than inverting it: if you would tear something down, you are obliged to build the thing that replaces it.

Take the obligation literally this month: find out from your parish or a nearby center what it actually provides for a woman carrying a baby with a lethal diagnosis — perinatal hospice referrals, funeral costs, counseling, help with other children — and whether that help is written down anywhere a doctor could hand a patient. If it isn't, ask what it would cost to have it in writing by Advent, and give toward that specific line rather than to a general fund.

Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
