Lawsuit Challenges Oklahoma's Abortion Ban Over Fatal Fetal Diagnoses
A lawsuit filed September 16 challenges an Oklahoma law that permits abortion only when medically necessary to save the mother's life, according to the Tulsa World. Among the plaintiffs is Magon Hoffman of Oklahoma City, along with other women who say doctors told them early in their pregnancies that the child would end in miscarriage, stillbirth, or death within hours or days of birth. Rather than carry those pregnancies to term under Oklahoma's current statute, the women traveled out of state to obtain abortions. The lawsuit seeks to expand the law's exceptions beyond the current life-of-the-mother standard to cover cases involving a fatal fetal prognosis.
