What Alinsky tactic is being used

2 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.

Rule 13

“Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

The story is not about a policy debate; it is about one named man and one small gym. Hambrecht's name, his gym's name, and his own admission of past infidelity are all in the frame, and the reported pressure is a personalized online pile-on rather than a complaint filed with any agency. That is target-picked, frozen, personalized, and polarized: the abstract question of single-sex facilities has been collapsed into one person's character.

Counter-Rule 13 · Radical Solidarity

Stand publicly with whoever has been singled out. Isolation is the whole mechanism; refusing it disarms the tactic.

If you know the owner or others facing a similar pile-on, say so in your own name — a signed note to him, a public comment under your real name, a visit to the business. Ask your church's men's group to invite him to explain the model rather than leaving him to answer a camera alone. Refuse the version of solidarity that means resharing the mockery to condemn it; that only enlarges the pile.

Rule 9

“The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.”

The alert's own text says there is no regulatory or legal action against the gym — only online criticism — yet the action items are written as though litigation were imminent. The unnamed threat ("you could be sued") is doing far more work than any filed complaint, and readers who own businesses will feel exposed without knowing to what.

Counter-Rule 9 · Courageous Realism

Name the worst case out loud and cost it honestly. Fear of the unnamed is doing most of the work.

Cost the worst case honestly this month: find out in writing whether your own city has an adopted public-accommodation ordinance and what it lists (see item 2's letter), then read what federal law actually covers. Write the answer on one page and keep it. If the honest answer is "no ordinance applies here," say that plainly rather than repeating a fear you have not checked.

Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
