Denver Gazette Backs Colorado Ballot Measures on Trafficking, Youth Sports, Trans Surgery
The Denver Gazette editorial board has endorsed a "yes" vote on Colorado Propositions 133, 134, and 135, appearing on the Nov. 3 mail ballot. Proposition 133 would upgrade child sex-trafficking for sexual servitude from a Class 2 to a Class 1 felony, mandating life without parole; the paper notes House Judiciary Committee Democrats voted down a similar legislative measure last spring. Proposition 134 would require K-12 and collegiate athletes in Colorado to compete on teams matching their "biological reproductive system" rather than gender identity, with an exception allowing girls to join boys' teams when no girls' team exists. Proposition 135 would prohibit sex-change surgery on minors in Colorado, bar health care professionals from performing such procedures on minors, and block state or federal funds from paying for them. The measures were placed on the ballot through citizen petition drives led by groups including Protect Kids Colorado and Protect Our Children, according to the Gazette.

These ballot measures address matters Scripture speaks to directly: the sanctity of children's bodies and lives, and the created order of male and female. Christians should recognize that protecting children from trafficking, from being pressed into competing against the opposite sex, and from irreversible surgical alteration of their God-given bodies is not a partisan preference but a biblical concern. That a legislative committee blocked a straightforward anti-trafficking penalty increase, requiring citizens to petition it onto the ballot themselves, shows how contested even basic child protection has become. Believers in Colorado should treat this as a test of whether civil law will still recognize the vulnerability of children and the reality of biological sex.
