Colorado Ballot Measures Would Restrict Youth Gender Surgery, Sports
Status: MediumSeverity: 1 - Worth Knowing

The Colorado Sun profiled Kaitlin Lee, a Wellington mother who founded Protect Kids Colorado after her 12-year-old daughter was invited to a middle-school "gender and sexualities" club in the Poudre School District that Lee says was disguised as an art club. At the club, a guest speaker reportedly discussed puberty blockers and gender transitioning without parental knowledge; Lee's daughter soon identified as transgender. Lee's lawsuit against the district was dismissed, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear it. She went on to organize three November ballot measures: Proposition 134, requiring girls' sports teams (K-college) be limited to biological females; Proposition 135, banning gender-transition surgeries for minors 17 and under; and Proposition 133, mandating life sentences for child sex traffickers. Colorado currently permits gender-affirming medical care for minors and has broad legal protections for transgender students. Opponents, including One Colorado's Jax Gonzalez, argue the measures harm transgender youth. Lee has reported death threats and increased security at her home over her advocacy.

Why Bible-Believing Christians Should Care

This story sits at the center of the family mountain: who decides what a child is taught about sex and gender — parents or the state? Scripture affirms that God made humanity male and female by design, not as a choice to be revised through hormones or surgery on minors. A public school club that introduced a 12-year-old to gender ideology and medical transition pathways without her parents' knowledge illustrates how institutions can bypass parental authority entirely. Whatever the outcome of Colorado's ballot measures, Christians should recognize this as a live example of the jurisdictional dispute between the state and the family over a child's body, identity, and moral formation — and should expect similar efforts in other states' schools.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. — Genesis 1:27

From the book

As the Chapter 8b case study showed, the capture of parental authority usually happens by reframing morality as safety. Activists introduce concepts of gender theory or sexual liberation into schools. They do not call it moral instruction, which would be the parent's domain. They call it comprehensive health education, which is the expert's domain. Then when a parent objects to explicit material, the institution answers that these materials were selected by credentialed experts and the parent is not an expert, so the objection is invalid.
