California Passes Bills on Jewish Identity, Worship-Zone Protections
The California legislature approved six bills addressing antisemitism and Jewish community concerns in the final hours of its 2026 session, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. SB 1387 would classify "Jewish" as an ethnic and racial identity on state demographic forms used by schools, unemployment offices, and prisons, taking effect in 2030 if signed. AB 2664, the "Safe Worship Zone Act," would create a 100-foot buffer around house-of-worship entrances, barring anyone from coming within 8 feet of a congregant without consent — modeled on Colorado's abortion-clinic bubble-zone law. AB 1763 would make religious holiday observance an excused school absence without a written parental request. AB 1836 would extend nonprofit security grants to off-site religious events, and AB 1853 would bar false or misleading statements in state voter guides. All six bills now go to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto them. The bills were backed by Jewish California, a coalition of 43 organizations, and California's Legislative Jewish Caucus.

Why Bible-Believing Christians Should Care
Bible-believing Christians should take note of this legislation on two fronts. First, Scripture calls God's people to oppose antisemitism and to bless, not curse, the descendants of Abraham. Second, several provisions — the worship-zone buffer and excused religious absences — are written broadly enough to apply to any "house of worship" or "religious holiday," meaning churches could invoke the same protections. Christians engaged on the government mountain should track how these frameworks are applied in practice, since precedents set for one faith community often become templates either for protecting or restricting others. Churches should understand what legal tools now exist to protect congregants from harassment at their doors.
