You can ask, in writing, whether pronouns in the signature block are required or merely encouraged, and you can request a religious accommodation if they are required. Federal law generally requires covered employers to consider a sincere religious objection to a compelled statement and to look for a workable alternative. Ask first, object calmly, and keep the request and the answer on paper.
What is actually happening
A line item in an email signature looks like a formatting rule, but it is a statement about what you believe a person is. The request usually arrives as "encouraged," which means participation is tracked and non-participation becomes visible. What it is fishing for is not the two words themselves. It is a quiet, documented act of affirmation from you that can be cited later as the settled standard everyone accepted.
The Visible Opt-Out · Rule 13. A voluntary rollout sorts the staff into those who complied and those who did not, and the short list of holdouts becomes the target. Once you are on that list alone, the issue stops being policy and becomes your name. The counter is solidarity and daylight: ask the question openly, in writing, so you are one employee following procedure rather than one employee refusing.
What Scripture says
“Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” Ephesians 4:25
What the book says · Chapter 23, The Mountain of Business & Economics: Christian Stewardship and Economic Influence
“When a department attempts to compel speech, the employee should record the interaction professionally and contemporaneously. That prepares the ground for legal defense in the Government mountain if rights are actually violated. Documentation created after the fact is worth very little.”
From Rules for Radical Christians, quoted exactly.
What the law generally says
Federal employment law in the United States generally requires employers above a certain size to consider a request for religious accommodation when a sincerely held belief conflicts with a workplace requirement, and to grant it unless it would impose a real burden on the business. A signature block is often an area where an alternative exists, such as name, title, department, and contact information without the additional line. Employees of government bodies and public institutions often have added protections against being compelled to state something they do not believe. A number of states have their own civil rights laws that may run broader or narrower than the federal floor, and some have their own accommodation procedures with their own deadlines. Which of those applies to you turns on your state and your employer, which is what Ask looks up.
The words to use
"I want to make sure I understand the signature policy. I'm glad to include my name, title, and contact information, but adding pronouns would require me to state something I don't believe is true, and my faith doesn't permit that. Can you confirm in writing whether this line is required or optional, and if it's required, tell me how to submit a religious accommodation request?"
Your move
- Get the policy in writing. Reply to whoever sent the request and ask for the actual written policy or the email that announced it, so you know whether you are dealing with a rule, a suggestion, or one manager's preference.
- Send the accommodation request yourself, in plain professional language, before anyone escalates. State the belief briefly, name the alternative you are offering, and ask for a written answer.
- Propose the workable alternative up front. A signature with your name, title, department, phone, and address does the business job the policy exists to do. Make the accommodation easy to grant.
- Find the others quietly. You are almost certainly not the only one, and a lone objector is easy to single out while several asking the same procedural question is not.
- Keep doing excellent work in the meantime, and keep it visible. Competence is the thing that buys you standing to hold a conviction.
- Document contemporaneously: date, who said it, what was said, what you answered. Notes written the same day are worth far more than a reconstruction six months later.
- Ask for the decision in writing, including the reason if the answer is no, and ask who to appeal to.
- Do not edit anyone else's signature, lecture coworkers, or argue theology in a group thread. The tactic wants an angry reaction from you; give it a calm procedural request instead.
