Michigan Christian Youth Ministry Sues Township Over Denied Meeting Permit

Michigan Christian Youth Ministry Sues Township Over Denied Meeting Permit

What Alinsky tactic is being used

3 of the thirteen rules are in play here — campaigns rarely run just one.

Rule 13

“Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

The complaint describes a vocal group of local activists who moved from opposing a land-use application to leveling "grooming" allegations against Micah and Kya Cramer by name — the shift from an issue to two identifiable people is the freeze-and-personalize step. The pressure on the school district to bar the group from volunteer activities extends the isolation beyond the zoning question into the couple's standing in the community.

Counter-Rule 13 · Radical Solidarity

Stand publicly with whoever has been singled out. Isolation is the whole mechanism; refusing it disarms the tactic.

If a named couple in your own congregation or ministry is singled out this way, put your name next to theirs in public: sign the sign-in sheet at the meeting, speak in the three-minute comment slot identifying yourself and your relationship to them, and submit a written comment so it enters the minutes. Ask your church leadership to state in writing that the accused volunteers remain in good standing pending any actual finding. Refuse the quiet accommodation of pulling them from visible roles "until this blows over."

Rule 8

“Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions.”

The reported campaign ran on more than one front at once — opposition at the Planning Commission across months of deliberation, then separate pressure on the school district over volunteer access. Losing on one track did not end it; the venue simply changed, which is the pattern of sustained pressure by varied tactics rather than a single objection.

Counter-Rule 8 · Institutional Resilience

Decide in advance, in writing, what the institution will and will not concede — so exhaustion cannot make the decision for it.

Before the next agenda item, get your board or session to write down one page: what the ministry will concede (hours, parking, occupancy caps, signage) and what it will not (who may attend, what is taught, whether prayer counts as "assembly"). Date it and put it in the minutes. Then when the fifth request for a study or a delay arrives, the answer is already decided and no one has to make it while tired.

Rule 3

“Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.”

The fight was not conducted on theology, where the ministry is competent, but on special-land-use procedure, use tables and the definition of a "club" — ground where a youth ministry has no practice. That the township's own attorney reportedly advised the Commission the use complied with zoning, and four commissioners voted to deny anyway, shows how much turns on procedural terrain most churches never learn.

Counter-Rule 3 · Preparation and Width

Prepare the unfamiliar ground before you are dragged onto it. "I don't know, I'll find out and come back" beats an improvised answer.

This month, download your municipality's zoning ordinance and find two things: the table of permitted and special uses, and the written standards a special use must meet. Learn who your zoning administrator is and what a written zoning determination costs. At a hearing, "I don't have that figure, I will get it and submit it in writing before the next meeting" is stronger than an improvised answer that ends up in the minutes.

Chapter 3 sets out the rules; Chapter 15 answers each of them in turn. This is that pairing applied to this story.
